Ascend Consulting · Worksheet for freelancers

Price your offer, not your hours.

Most freelancers are paid for time or pieces of work. Clients, though, are paying for a result. This worksheet helps you find that result, package it as one offer and put a fair price on it. It takes about an hour.

How to use it: print it or save it as a PDF, then fill it in with a pen. Use real projects, not the ones you wish you had.

1

Look at your last five projects

Write down what actually happened. The last column matters most: what changed for the client after your work?

ClientWhat you didWhat you chargedHours it tookWhat changed for them
2

Find the result clients pay for

Read the last column again. Which result shows up most often, or mattered most to the client? That is what they were really buying.

The result my clients pay for is…

ExampleA content writer notices her clients never mention "blogs". They mention winning a big deal after sharing her case study. Her result is: case studies that help IT companies close deals.

3

Pick the client who needs it most

Not everyone. One type of client who feels this problem strongly and can pay for the result. Describe them in one line: what kind of company, how big, and what moment they are in.

The client who needs this most is…
4

Package it as one offer

Put the result, what is included, the timeline and what is not included into one simple offer with a name. A clear offer is easier to buy than a list of services.

Offer name · Result · What's included · Timeline · Not included

Example"Deal-ready case studies: three case studies a month for IT services companies, from client interview to publish-ready story, delivered in four weeks. Design and printing not included."

5

Set the price from the result

Ask: if this works, what is it worth to the client? A new deal, time saved, a hire they don't need to make. Your price should be a fair share of that value, not your hours multiplied by a rate. Then offer three versions so the client chooses how much, not whether.

SmallA smaller piece of the result
StandardThe full result. Most clients should pick this.
FullThe result plus extra support or speed
6

Say the price with confidence

State the price once, say what it covers, and stop talking. Don't explain your hours and don't offer a discount before anyone asks for one. If a client only wants cheap, they are not the client from step 3.

The way I will say my price: "The standard package is ₹____. It covers…"
